On November 7, 2023, China will join the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents originating from the United States or notarized within the United States will only require the apostille issued by the Secretary of State’s office for China. Federal documents for China will only require the apostille from the U.S. Department of State.

For example, if your birth certificate originates from California, the California state apostille will be sufficient for China. You no longer will be required to legalize the documents through the Embassy or Consulate office.
If you need to apostille a Patent or Trademark for China, the apostille issued by the U.S. Department of State is sufficient for China.
