Do you need to attest your marriage certificate for Kuwait?

Kuwait is currently not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.  In order to attest your marriage certificate for Kuwait, it will need to be certified through the state, the US Department of State in Washington DC, and the Kuwait Embassy or Consulate office in the United States.  This three step process is commonly referred to as the “Legalization Process”.

If you need to get your marriage certificate attested for use in Kuwait, you will need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Get your marriage certificate certified by the state or origin. For example, if you were married in Illinois, the state of Illinois will need to certify the marriage certificate for Kuwait.  If you were married in California, the state of California will need to certify it.

Step 2: The next step is to have the documents certified by the US Department of State in Washington DC.  The US Department of state will certify the state’s certificate so it can then be legalized by the Embassy or Consulate office.

Step 3: Get the authenticated marriage certificate attested by the Kuwaiti Embassy or Consulate in the country where the marriage took place. This involves submitting the marriage certificate along with a completed application form, fees, and any other required documents.

Once the Kuwaiti Embassy or Consulate has attested the marriage certificate, you will need to get it further attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kuwait. This confirms that the Kuwaiti Embassy or Consulate is recognized by the Kuwaiti government and that the marriage certificate has been properly authenticated.

Finally, you may need to get the attested marriage certificate translated into Arabic by a certified translator in Kuwait, depending on the purpose for which it will be used.
