Do you need to apostille your documents through the US Department of State? Have you been asked to complete form DS-4194?
The two most common questions asked are…
What is the current processing time through the U.S. Department of State in Washington DC? How long is the processing time to apostille an FBI criminal background check?
As of this article (May 31,2021), the current estimated processing time is 6-8 weeks. The processing time may change depending on the volume of work received at our Washington DC office and at the US Department of State’s office. We anticipate the processing time to be gradually reduced during the next few months but we are not 100% certain. We do not believe the in-person counter service will reopen this summer unless the US Department of State can reduce their mail-in processing time to two to three weeks.
The current estimated processing time can be found here: Apostille Processing Time. As soon as the Counter service is reopened, will will update our processing time page to reflect the change. In the meantime, all documents are processed by mail. Completed files are retuned back by FedEx for added security.
In a phone conference on May 13, 2021 with the US Department of State, we were advised that the US Department of State has outsourced some of their work in order to catch up on the backlog. Hopefully, we will see a noticeable difference soon.
